How Much Hair Loss is Normal For a Daily Basis?

Hair loss is a pretty normal thing for people to experience everyday, but how much hair loss is normal and when does it push the boundaries into concerning?

We’ve all lost hair before. Whether you’ve been combing it or simply hopped into a shower, you’ll have noticed that some of your hair has fallen out. You might be concerned about this, but don’t worry. It’s actually fairly normal to lose hair on a daily basis, but not too much. Confused? Don’t worry, we’ll explain everything.

Why Do We Lose Hair?

So, the first question that you might have is probably something along the lines of “why do we lose hair at all?”

Well, the answer for this is that hair has a natural lifecycle that it goes through just like any other part of the body. Hair has a lifespan of between two and five years, so at some point in that period, it’ll fall out naturally.

The first part of hair’s life cycle is where it’s growing and still firmly attached to your head. This is called the “anagen” phase, where it’ll grow about 1 cm each month.

However, all things must come to an end, and your hair reaches what’s called the “catagen” phase, which is where it will stop growing entirely. This is in preparation for the “telogen” phase. As the last part of the lifespan, this is where the hair falls out and dies.

So How Much Hair Loss is Normal?

So, how much hair loss is considered to be normal in the grand scheme of things? Well, it’s important to understand that people can lose up to 100 strands of hair everyday, with the average count being somewhere between 50 and 100.  That’s only 0.1%.

Some people can lose more than this due to medical conditions like alopecia, or female pattern hair loss. It’s also possible to lose more hair through chronic stress and illness.

What Can You Do to Fix Hair Loss?

If you’re losing too much hair everyday for one reason or another, that can make it difficult to retain a rich, full head of hair over time. If this happens, you should consider a hair transplant as a solution.
